Job Description
Area 49 aims to facilitate innovative and creative learning by providing technology and equipment lending, research and design workspaces, and technology support services. Area 49’s spaces are the Area 49 Desk, Makerspace, Gaming Lab, Visualization Lab, EZ Video Studios, Multimedia Lab, and T3.
Assistants will not only staff Area 49 Desk, but will also work on technology-based and creative projects designed to enhance the spaces themselves and Area 49’s instructional goals. Assistants will receive training in operating Area 49’s technology, including the 3D printers, large format printers, audio and video equipment loans, electronics kits, and more. Assistants will also provide general troubleshooting for library technology and provide assistance with copy/scan/print issues and general library questions.
Preferred Experience, Skills, and Competencies
- Strong customer service and communications skills;
- Ability to problem solve and multitask;
- Proficient with email, chat, and Microsoft Office suite;
- Ability to make rapid decisions and discuss issues with patrons in a clear, calm, and diplomatic manner;
- Experience with Macintosh and Windows operating systems;
- Promptness, dependability, and reliability;
- Detail-oriented;
- Ability to work in a team environment;
- Must be able to lift 20 lbs
Duties and Responsibilities
- Staffing the library technology desk, which includes the following:
- Providing exemplary customer service in-person, via telephone, email, and virtual chat;
- Assisting library patrons with printing, scanning, and other technology related problems;
- Providing information to patrons about library technology services including policies and procedures;
- Providing basic assistance to patrons navigating library electronic resources and website;
- Performing basic troubleshooting for computers/software;
- Recording all patron transactions;
- Monitoring and stock office supplies for patrons and desk staff;
- Referring patrons to appropriate departments and staff as needed;
- Assisting with desk opening and closing procedures;
- Assisting in other tasks as needed
- Working on technology-related projects by:
- Developing instructions for using specific technologies;
- Preparing items and workflows in preparation for classes and workshops;
- Developing resources to promote or enhance the spaces

- In order to keep the Area 49 Desk operating at full capacity, we need the continued support of student workers. Our assistants are strengthening their customer service and communication skills while also gaining valuable technical knowledge that can be applied to their future endeavors.
