Job Description
The Center for Adolescent Literacies at UNC Charlotte is partnering with The Relatives in Charlotte to hire and train GED tutors to work with young adult clients at The Relatives On Ramp Resources facility. The Relatives is a system of resources that helps youth ages 7-24 find shelter and support in Mecklenburg County.
Applicants should have solid academic skills in subjects including reading plus two to three of the following areas: mathematics, science and social studies. Good communication and people skills are important with an ability to relate to others whose life experiences from your own.
The GED is a high school equivalency test that requires critical thinking and problem solving more than memorization of content. There are four subtests on the GED: Reading through Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Mathematical Reasoning. Tutors with a good academic record and comfort with test taking can learn to tutor the GED with training we provide.
Tutoring is with clients at The Relatives between the ages of 18 and 24. Hours for tutoring are arranged Mon through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. identified as best for tutoring where possible. Tutors must be punctual and responsible and show up on time as schedule. The primary focus is on GED tutoring but tutors can work with professional staff at The Relatives to provide workshops for clients and help in other capacities. Virtual tutoring may become an option later.
Paid training and ongoing support provided by The Relatives and The Center for Adolescent Literacies. Applicants must complete a comprehensive background check and orientation conducted by The Relatives.
This position is open to students who qualify and have Federal Work Study funding. Tutors must have reliable transportation of their own (i.e., a car). To help with mileage costs, tutors are paid for travel time to and from campus.
