STW: DS Test Center Scribe - Undergraduate Level

The Office of Disability Services seeks one (1) upperclassman or graduate-level student to join our team as a scribe with the DS Test Center. Disability Services works to ensure that students with disabilities have access to education and campus life at UNC Charlotte. The DS Test Center is designed to support students with disabilities and their faculty by providing testing accommodations in an inclusive, welcoming environment. This position is for Fall 2025. 

Position Summary: The primary role of a testing scribe is to transcribe a student's answers verbatim. The scribe will write down or type exactly what the student dictates. The scribe's duties are strictly limited to the transcription role. The scribe is not permitted to provide any assistance with the content of the test, offer hints or suggestions, correct spelling or grammar, or answer questions about the test material. 

To be effective in this role, a scribe must possess excellent listening and writing skills, a high level of integrity, and an understanding of the course content and course-specific wording to ensure accurate transcription. It is critical that a scribe does not provide any assistance, hints, or feedback to the student; the sole responsibility is to transcribe exactly what is dictated. 

The testing scribe will only be scheduled to work when a student with that specific accommodation needs to take a test, meaning some weeks they will not work any hours with DS. Schedule is to be determined, and hired scribes will not have set weekly hours. Planning for the scribe schedule will occur in advance, typically a week to a month prior to the scribing session, and will be confirmed by the Academic Testing Coordinator for Disability Services. 

Because course content-knowledge is often needed for scribes to be effective, Disability Services will hire candidates who are directly recommended by the appropriate academic department.
