ACLS Mission and Overview

Formed a century ago, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is a nonprofit federation of 80 scholarly organizations. As the leading representative of American scholarship in the humanities and interpretive social sciences, ACLS holds a core belief that knowledge is a public good. As such, ACLS strives to promote the circulation of humanistic knowledge throughout society. In addition to stewarding and representing its member organizations, ACLS employs its endowment and $37 million annual operating budget to support scholarship in the humanities and social sciences and to advocate for its central role in the twenty-first century.

Project Summary

Reporting to the Director of Communications and working closely with program, fundraising, and leadership staff across the organization, this internship will focus on creating video and digital content that highlights positive outcomes of fellowship and grant programs and initiatives advancing change in higher education structures, as well as institutional membership. This intern will create content by co-producing, recording, and editing Zoom and in person interviews with program awardees and participants, as well as individuals representing member institutions.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the creative side of ACLS communications strategy and outreach. This intern will gain valuable skills and experience in promotional writing, video production, strategic story development, project management, brand-driven content development, social media strategy, search engine optimization research and strategy, and presentation for lay audiences, as well as develop their own portfolio of work to use for future opportunities.

This is a remote position except for attendance at the ACLS Annual Meeting, May 2-3, 2024, in Baltimore, Maryland. This role requires 20-25 hours/week with flexible work hours through the end of June.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with Communications team and other ACLS stakeholders in identifying subjects and developing strategy and focus for each interview
  • Draft interview scripts designed to capture responses that illustrate positive outcomes and benefits of ACLS programs, initiatives, and partnerships
  • Draft and administer production calendars, run of show schedules, review and editing flows, and other resources
  • Contact, coordinate, and conduct interviews with ACLS awardees and member institution representatives
  • Record and capture content using ACLS Zoom and digital photo equipment
  • Edit video content and write compelling website and social media text to accompany completed videos and stories
  • Collaborate with Communications team in optimizing content with metadata
  • Coordinate with Communications team in storing and cataloging digital assets
  • Conduct onsite interviews at ACLS Annual Meeting, May 2-3, 2024 in Baltimore, MD
  • Create and deliver culminating presentation for ACLS leadership and staff
  • Performing related projects as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled or recent graduate (within past 12 months) in a degree program in marketing, advertising, journalism, communications, digital technologies, emerging media, film production, or related field
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office Suite and Canva, Adobe Creative Suite a plus
  • Highly organized and detail oriented with ability manage priorities, multi-task, advance projects, and meet to and deadlines
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively, as well as independently
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Interest or experience in issues and challenges facing the humanities and interpretive social sciences
  • Passion for approaching creative challenges with a curiosity and imagination
  • Strong interest in learning about creating content for campaigns, fundraising, and raising visibility for nonprofit brands and initiatives

Compensation:

  • Salary: $25/hour
  • 20-25 hours a week through June 30
