Job Description

Title: Intern

Reports to: Intern Supervisor

Hours: 20 - 25 hours per week for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025

Location: fully remote; due to state regulations, must be working from one of the following states: AZ, CA, DC, FL, IL, KY, MA, MD, NJ, NY, PA, RI, TN, TX, VA, VT

GIFFORDS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives from gun violence. Led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, GIFFORDS shifts culture, changes policies, and challenges injustice, inspiring Americans across the country to fight gun violence. We are looking for current college undergraduate students with at least one year of college experience to join our team during the school year as paid interns. The ideal GIFFORDS intern is highly organized, detail-oriented, a strong writer, and passionate about the issue of gun violence prevention.

GIFFORDS interns are paid $18.50 per hour or the local minimum wage, whichever is higher. We will work with interns to gain academic credit if applicable. Start date is on or September 9th with a commitment of approximately 25 hours per week throughout the school year with an end date in May 2025. Work must be done during typical business hours (9 am to 5 pm, Monday-Friday). Interns are not expected to work during their exam periods or between semesters and other school year breaks.

Interns will work on one or more of our teams listed below to help support our ongoing efforts in the fight against gun violence. Exact team placement will be based on relevant experience of each intern and capacity needs of each team.

Communications Intern

  • Monitor and assemble daily press clips 
  • Monitor related breaking news
  • Draft various comms materials, including press releases, social, blog posts, and other content
  • Create and organize press lists
  • Research assigned topics
  • Assist with web design and other digital content

Political and Coalitions Intern

  • Conduct media monitoring for key races, states, and regions
  • Research personal, electoral, legislative, and political histories of candidates and incumbents
  • Collect and identify relevant political and electoral research from various outlets and partners
  • Organize data pertaining to partners and advocates
  • Research partner opportunities and potential collaborations
  • Write first drafts of memos and briefs
  • Assist with event coordination
