Job Description

The Accessibility Consultant within the Office of Disability Services seeks a graduate student to assist with tasks related to physical, digital and programmatic accessibility for people with disabilities. Preferred majors are architecture, construction management or Civil Engineering. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Attention to detail. Some basic computer and electronic troubleshooting. Assist with data collection and reports. Must be comfortable learning new systems and various components of accessibility for people with disabilities. Must work well with a team and independently. Training will be provided, but candidate must also be a self-starter. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist accessibility consultant in the development, implementation and monitoring of university efforts to legally comply with the ADA and Section 504 legislation, building codes and regulatory guidance, related state and local regulations, policies, standards and case law. 
  • Represent accessibility consultant in various campus capital project meetings and site reviews, including design plan review and ADA checklists for projects.
  • Develop enough familiarity with federal and state accessibility standards to thoroughly evaluate projects for access and inclusion for people with disabilities, and intelligently speak to project managers, contractors, campus administration and vendors regarding compliance concerns.
  • Understanding of or willingness to learn the techniques used to make websites, electronic documents, and media content accessible.
  • Assist with the development of training materials and newsletters that cover various topics surrounding accessibility for people with disabilities.
  • Learn about assistive technology (CCTV, SmartPens, AT software, etc.) in order to train students and DS staff on the use of equipment.
  • Consistently research trends and developments in software applications and assistive technology to enhance and grow the inventory of offerings for students with disabilities.
  • Help to maintain records of assistive technology and make them ready for next users.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned, including final exam administration and commencement ceremonies.
