Overview

University Recreation (UREC) is seeking dependable and motivated students to join our team for the Summer 2026 and Fall 2026 semesters. As one of the largest student employers on campus, UREC provides a professional environment where students gain essential experience in operations, leadership, and community engagement.

The Universal Hiring System

UREC is hiring for multiple roles. Compensation varies by position and ranges from $11–$15 per hour.

This posting utilizes a centralized hiring process. Applicants submit one application to be considered for multiple program areas across the department. Through the application portal, candidates will rank their interest in the following areas:

UREC Program Area Descriptions

Facility Operations (Facility Assistant)

  • Mission: To manage the daily operations and fitness floor safety of the primary UREC facility.

  • Core Responsibilities:

    • Access Control: Manage the UREC front desk, verifying memberships and facilitating equipment check-outs.

    • Fitness Floor Oversight: Conduct regular rounds of the fitness floors to assist patrons, enforce policies, and ensure equipment is used safely.

    • Risk Management: Perform cleaning protocols, inspect machines for defects, and identify potential risks on the fitness floors.

Satellite Facility Operations (Facility Assistant)

  • The Role: To provide independent operational oversight for Belk Gymnasium, the NRFC (Northeast Recreational Field Complex), and the Hayes Field Complex.

  • Core Responsibilities:

    • Multi-Site Oversight: Rotate between different campus locations (Gyms and Fields) based on the recreational schedule.

    • Field & Gym Management: Control facility access, manage equipment inventory, and sell guest passes at satellite locations.

    • Policy Enforcement: Ensure all participants at outdoor field complexes and Belk Gym adhere to UREC safety guidelines and reservation schedules.

    • Logistics: Coordinate evening and weekend operations at specialized sites, often serving as the primary point of contact for patrons in those spaces.

Member Services Assistant

  • The Role: Acts as the primary administrative liaison for UREC members, managing the full membership lifecycle from enrollment and data auditing to high-level conflict resolution.

  • Core Responsibilities:

    • Administrative Lifecycle: Manage all digital membership activations, renewals, cancellations, and financial adjustments (refunds/transfers) within the management software.

    • Data Integrity: Conduct regular audits of member databases, assist with sales trend reporting, and perform system reconciliations to ensure accuracy.

    • Member Advocacy: Resolve escalated issues regarding account discrepancies, payment errors, and access troubles via phone, email, and in-person.

    • Engagement & Outreach: Develop member onboarding materials (welcome guides, FAQs) and conduct facility orientations to increase member retention.

    • Strategic Support: Track member feedback and "pain points" to recommend improvements for the online enrollment process and departmental digital content.

Personal Trainer

        • The Role: To provide evidence-based, customized exercise programming and coaching to help clients reach individual fitness goals.

        • Core Responsibilities:

          • Conduct comprehensive fitness assessments and consultations.

          • Design and implement individualized workout plans based on client needs.

          • Educate clients on proper exercise technique, form, and safety.

          • Requirements: Must hold a current NCCA-accredited Personal Training certification (NASM, ACE, ACSM, etc.).

        Group Fitness Instructor

        • The Role: To lead safe and engaging group exercise classes for the UNC Charlotte community.

        • Core Responsibilities:

          • Design and lead group classes (e.g., HIIT, Yoga, Cycle) using proper exercise mechanics.

          • Provide modifications and progressions to accommodate all fitness levels.

          • Maintain group fitness equipment and studio spaces.

          • Requirements: Must hold a fitness-related certification or have completed the UREC in-house training program (provided).

        Aquatics (Lifeguard)

        • The Role: To ensure the safety of all patrons utilizing UREC indoor and outdoor pool facilities.

        • Core Responsibilities:

          • Maintain active surveillance of pool decks and water areas.

          • Implement the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and perform rescues/First Aid as needed.

          • Monitor water chemistry and perform daily facility safety inspections.

          • Requirements: Must hold current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification.

        Intramural Sports

        Intramural Sports Official

        • The Role: Responsible for the on-field/on-court officiating of all Intramural Sports leagues and tournaments, ensuring a safe and fair competitive environment.

        • Core Responsibilities:

          • Officiate games according to specific sport rules, mechanics, and positioning.

          • Lead pre-game captains' meetings to communicate rules, modifications, and expectations.

          • Manage player conduct and sportsmanship during high-intensity competition.

          • Requirements: Attendance at mandatory sport-specific training clinics and successful completion of officiating certifications for each sport.

        Intramural Sports Assistant

        • The Role: Provides the administrative and logistical infrastructure for game-night operations and participant management.

        • Core Responsibilities:

          • Participant Management: Verify student eligibility and lead the check-in process for all teams and individuals.

          • Game Logistics: Manage the score table, timing regulations, and foul tracking during live play.

          • Site Oversight: Assist with the preparation, teardown, and safety inspection of all indoor and outdoor game sites.

          • Administrative Support: Ensure the accurate completion of scoresheets and the entry of game results into the departmental software (DSE).

        Sport Clubs Assistant

        • The Role: To provide administrative and logistical support for 40+ student-led competitive club teams.

        • Core Responsibilities:

          • Assist club leaders with compliance tasks, travel logistics, and weekly administrative duties.

          • Act as a primary liaison between individual sport clubs and UREC professional staff.

          • Track program progress to ensure smooth club operations throughout the semester.

        Outreach & Engagement

        Media Specialist

        • The Role: Responsible for the high-level production of social and digital content to capture the life of the UREC community and promote departmental programs.

        • Core Responsibilities:

          • Produce visual assets through photography, videography, and graphic design.

          • Capture live programs and special events to highlight the student experience.

          • Collaborate with the media team to develop and execute digital content strategies.

          • Manage a professional production process in a fast-paced environment.

        Marketing Administrator

        • The Role: Supports the administrative and physical distribution of UREC marketing campaigns and outreach initiatives.

        • Core Responsibilities:

          • Assist in the ideation and strategic planning of marketing materials and events.

          • Manage promotional inventory, engagement resources, and outreach supplies.

          • Oversee the production and physical distribution of print materials across all recreational facilities.

          • Provide clerical and administrative support for departmental outreach efforts.

        Universal Qualifications (All Positions)

        • Enrollment: Must be a currently enrolled UNC Charlotte student.

        • Standing: Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and in good conduct standing with the University.

        • Certifications: All hires must obtain American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid certification (UREC provides training opportunities for those not already certified).

        • Professionalism: Ability to represent University Recreation with an alert, helpful, and professional disposition.
