Entry level to seasoned professional, pay based on experience
SteelSite LLC is seeking a Structural Steel Designer to join our team in Wilmington, NC. The ideal candidate will play a key role in designing and detailing structural steel for commercial and industrial projects. You will collaborate with engineers, fabricators, and erection teams to produce accurate 3D models, shop drawings, and erection plans that ensure structural integrity, code compliance, and efficient fabrication and installation. He has been providing our NC/SC area structural designs for over 35 years and will be a wealth of knowledge to tap into.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed structural steel designs, including beams, columns, connections, braces, stairs, platforms, and miscellaneous steel components for commercial and industrial buildings.
- Create and/or work with 3D models and 2D construction drawings. Experience with using software such as Tekla Structures, SDS/2, AutoCAD, Revit, or similar tools would be a plus.
- Perform structural analysis and calculations for loads, stresses, and connections in accordance with AISC standards, building codes, and project specifications.
- Prepare shop drawings, fabrication details, bill of materials (BOM), and material take-offs to support efficient steel fabrication.
- Generate erection drawings and sequencing plans to guide on-site installation teams.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, detailers, fabricators, and clients to resolve design issues, incorporate feedback, and ensure project requirements are met.
- Review architectural and engineering plans to identify potential conflicts and propose value-engineered solutions.
- Conduct site visits as needed to verify field conditions and support erection activities.
- Ensure all designs prioritize safety, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with OSHA, AISC, and local regulations.
- Participate in project meetings and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams for seamless project delivery.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Drafting/Design Technology, Architecture, or a related field (Associate's degree with extensive experience may be considered).
- Preferred 2+ years of experience in structural steel design and detailing, preferably in commercial and industrial projects.
- Preferred proficiency in structural steel detailing software (e.g., Tekla Structures, SDS/2, Advance Steel) and CAD tools (AutoCAD, Revit).
- Knowledge of AISC standards, IBC building codes, welding symbols, and steel connection design (bolted and welded).
- Preferred familiarity with structural analysis software (e.g., RISA, STAAD, or RAM) is a plus.
- Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills for collaborating with teams and clients.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings.
- Professional certification (e.g., AISC certification or EIT/PE) is advantageous but not required.
