Jamil Niner Student Pantry
The Internship
Under the leadership of the Program Director for Basic Needs Services, the Food Pantry UIP Intern is primarily dedicated to the administration of the Jamil Niner Student Pantry. Intern hours would primarily take place between 11am - 5pm Monday - Friday. Some hours may take place outside of this time as approved)
Primary responsibilities include: recruitment, organization, and working with volunteers and student clients. The UIP Food Pantry Intern is expected to work between 15 hours per week, with the majority of the hours worked during the time the pantry is open for shopping (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday). The timeframe for this position is August 2026 to May 2027.
This internship is open to any major but would be an excellent opportunity for a Business, Public Administration, Public Health, Education, or Social Work major.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in the daily operations of the Jamil Niner Student Pantry and the Pantry Garden, including organizing events and stocking food and supplies.
Provide customer service by helping students select pantry items and answering inquiries about available resources.
Support the pantry’s outreach and awareness efforts by promoting services to students through social media or campus events.
Aid in maintaining an accurate inventory, tracking stock levels, and updating records.
Collaborate with pantry staff to plan and execute food drives, donation events, or other initiatives.
Participate in training sessions to better understand food security issues and resources available on campus.
Help with the setup and breakdown of pantry distributions and special events.
Assist in maintaining a clean, welcoming, and organized pantry environment.
Support pantry initiatives to increase student engagement and involvement with resources.
Learning Experience
The student will gain experience in supervision by working with our volunteer ambassador program, as well as our individual volunteers. They will help to organize service projects for volunteer ambassadors as well as tabling events, and presentations. They will help with sorting pantry shopper and volunteer data. They will help with the implementation of our new database Pantry Soft and help with communications and outreach. They will also be heavily involved in managing our To Go Bag Program as well as our automated lockers on campus.
Outcomes
Student will be able to demonstrate foundational supervision skills by supporting and guiding volunteer ambassadors and individual volunteers through event management.
Student will be able to plan, organize, and execute service projects, tabling events, and presentations for student volunteers.
After completing the Healthy Food Accessibility Pantry Training Program the student will be able to implement healthy food safety protocol for our individual volunteers
Student will be able to apply data informed decision making to improve volunteer engagement and pantry operations.
