The Executive Pathways Program is a paid summer internship (June - August) for college students to explore a rewarding career in public service.

This position is eligible for telework (https://mn.gov/mmb-stat/policies/1422-telework.pdf) for applicants who reside in Minnesota or in a bordering state, with supervisory approval and satisfactory performance. If you live in a state bordering Minnesota, you must live within 50 miles or less from the primary work location to be eligible for telework.

The Budget Operations Interns will work within the Financial Operations Division (FOD). The Budget Operations Intern will support the improvement and organization of internal process documentation. This internship is a great opportunity for students interested in learning how fiscal and budget operations work within state government. In this role, the intern will work closely with Budget Operations staff to understand day-to-day fiscal processes, identify gaps in existing documentation, and help develop clear and user-friendly standard operating procedures and reference guides. These materials will support both internal staff and program partners, especially during important fiscal close and open periods.

Some responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Shadow Budget Operations team members to learn state budget and fiscal processes

  • Review existing procedure documents and identify gaps or areas for improvement

  • Develop, update, and organize standard operating procedures and reference guides

  • Assist with documenting process variations and nuances across different funding sources

  • Review statewide fiscal policies to ensure alignment with internal practices

  • Support clear verbal and written communication of fiscal processes and responsibilities

  • Assist during key fiscal close and open periods by helping document timelines and expectations

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for an internship, you must meet the following requirements:

You must be a student at an accredited educational institution; or recently graduated December 2025 or May 2026

AND

  • Excellent human relation and communication skills sufficient to represent the position and Division in a professional, efficient, and clear manner

  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and contribute to a culture of inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred majors include: Accounting, Finance, Mathematics, Political Science, Communications, English or other Liberal Arts Majors

  • Strong written communication and organizational skills

  • Interested in state government, finance, public administration, or health and human services

  • Detail-oriented with an interest in process improvement

Additional Requirements

  • Must be in academic years of sophomore, junior, or senior (Graduate students allowed)

  • Must provide unofficial transcript to show proof of school enrollment

  • Must be willing to reside in Minnesota for the duration of internship

  • Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) criminal background check will be conducted on all finalists for this position. Finalists must pass the DHS background check.
