Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities
- Providing excellent customer service to Makerspace patrons, which includes:
- Answering questions about the Makerspace and Area 49
- Answering questions about print requests
- Welcoming patrons to the space and ensuring that they work safely
- Directing patrons to other library resources when necessary
- Collaborating with Makerspace team members to ensure patrons are served
- Primarily responsible for completing large format and 3D print requests during their working hours, which includes duties such as:
- Monitoring the incoming requests and keeping their status up to date
- Communicating with Patrons in person and via email about issues/questions/etc. regarding their requests
- Keeping a close eye on supply stock and communicating with their supervisor when more supplies are needed
- Completing requests in a timely manner
- Basic troubleshooting of printing technology, with supervisor help if needed
- Keeping the Makerspace clean and tidy, including duties such as:
- Keeping the tables, counters, and sink clear from debris, spills, unattended projects, and supplies
- Assisting Makerspace monitors with cleanup after events, classes, and activities held in the Makerspace
- Keeping cabinets and other storage areas organized and neat
- Assisting the Makerspace Monitors in tasks that have been assigned to them, when applicable to the assistant’s training/skills
Preferred Experience, Skills, and Competencies
- Strong customer service and written/verbal communication skills
- Ability to problem solve, multitask, and learn new software and hardware quickly
- Experience with printing is a plus, but not required
- Strong decision making skills and ability to communicate with patrons in a calm and professional manner
- Proficient in Gmail and Google Drive
- Experience with Windows/Mac operating systems
- Prompt, dependable, and reliable;
- Detail-oriented;
- Ability to work in a team environment;
- Must be able to lift 20 lbs
Schedule
The Makerspace is open from 10am-4pm Monday through Friday and applicants must be available to work 15 hours within that time frame. Hours may vary depending on semester, but applicants can expect to work the same times throughout a single semester. Please note that exact weekly hours are dependent on FWS award amount. Students must be eligible for Federal Work Study to apply.

Library student workers are also eligible to apply for the Shirley Derting Grubbs Student Employee Scholarship, which awards $10,000 to a library student worker who has worked in the library and plans to continue the position for the year after receiving the scholarship!
