Job Description

Job Responsibility:  Technical Expertise - Project Management - Sales and Marketing - Administrative

The mission of the Engineer I is to deliver quality engineering and design documents that are constructable and meet the critical success factors defined for the Project.  An Engineer I should strive to grow personally by developing a specialization in one or more of four key professional skill areas:  technical expertise, project management, sales and marketing and administrative.

The essential functions of the Engineer I are as follows:

Technical Expertise

Growth in technical expertise is a progression from a low level of specialized knowledge to recognition as a subject matter expert in the field. 

An Engineer I must demonstrate the ability to:

  • Work under close and immediate supervision of a licensed engineer to prepare design computations, design documents and quantity estimates.
  • Use computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering plans and reports.
  • Work with other project team members to reduce designs to working drawings.
  • Review the construction site to monitor progress and other duties per the contract documents.
  • Show responsibility for job specific quality as defined in a Practice’s or Project’s quality control plan.
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret engineering and construction documents, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  • Assist in the development of construction cost estimates for various projects.
  • Assist in the preparation or modification of reports, specifications, plans, construction documents, studies, permits, and designs for various projects.

    Project Management

    Growth in project management skills requires developing increasing expertise in “in-house” project management skills, and in client contact and public presentation.  Development of project management skills also involves demonstrating the ability to organize and lead project teams.

    An Engineer I must be able to:

  • Efficiently manage time towards completion of assignments within schedule and budget.  The position typically involves limited direct client contact.

    Sales and Marketing

    Growth in sales and marketing skills involves increasing responsibility in developing leads, developing and maintaining contacts within the field, converting current projects into follow-on projects, bringing in new work, writing proposals, participating in proposal presentations, negotiating contracts, writing articles and/or making conference presentations, and tracking and interpreting legislative and regulatory requirements.

     

    An Engineer I must be able to:

  • Assist in client contact and communication pertaining to specific projects.
  • Attend client and public meetings – days or nights.
  • Administrative

    Growth and participation in administration involves increasing responsibility in activities that include, but are not necessarily limited to aspects of the project management process; business unit financial management; personnel supervision; marketing; and/or company strategic planning.

    An Engineer I should be able to: 

  • Follow policies and procedures set forth in the CDG Employee Handbook.
  • Update your talent profile and resume on a periodic basis as determined by the Corporate Marketing Department to include new skills and experience developed.
  • Utilize VantagePoint to complete timesheets, expense reports, and other job specific tasks according to the schedule established by the Corporate Accounting Department.
  • Participate with the Corporate Marketing department in the development of “project write-ups” by offering details regarding your role in the project.
  • Notify Business Development Coordinator of any changes that need to be made to the Client Record to keep client, contact, and vendor information current in VantagePoint. The Client Record includes information such as Contact profiles, Address, organizational function, and other relevant information.
  • Adhere to Information security and other IT policies.
  • Utilize communication platforms including but not limited to Outlook, Teams, OneDrive/SharePoint, and phone system.

    Experience/Education:

    • BS degree in Civil Engineering with 0-2 years of experience
    • Valid driver’s license.

    Skills:

    • Computer-aided design using AutoCAD Civil3D and/or Microstation/InRoads.
    • Basic computer skills.
    • Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Communication skills, orally and written.
    • Critical thinking skills.
    • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situation.
    • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, trigonometry and financial functions.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Seeing, hearing, talking, standing, stooping, bending, walking, reading, and writing.
    • Reaching with hands and arms.
    • Ability to lift 25 lbs. or more.
    • Ability to work extended hours at times.

    Environment:

    • Predominantly office environment; some travel is required.
    • Occasionally works in outside weather conditions, possibly for extended assignments.
    • Noise level in the office work environment is usually low to moderate.
    • Noise level on the construction site is often loud.
