Job Description

TheDepartment of Public Utilities (DPU)is responsible foroversight of investor-owned electric power, natural gas, and water utilities in the Commonwealth; developing alternatives to traditional regulation; monitoring service quality; regulating safety in the transportation and gas pipeline areas; and for certain aspects associated with the siting of energy facilities. The mission of the Department is to ensure that utility consumers are provided with the most reliable service at the lowest possible cost; to protect the public safety from transportation and gas pipeline related accidents; and to ensure that residential ratepayers' rights are protected. The DPUseeksto promote safety, security, reliability of service, affordability, equity, and greenhouse gas emission reductions. TheElectric Power Division(EPD)advises the DPU Commission on issues related to the regulation ofelectric utilities. There are three broad categories of EPD-related issues and cases: (1) the provision of reliable, cost-effective electric supply to customers, including competitive supply, basic service, and ratemaking; (2) initiatives and activities aimed at achieving a more efficient, modernized, and environmentally sustainable electricity system, including energy efficiency; distributed generation including renewables and storage, net metering, and interconnection; grid modernization; and electric vehicle infrastructure; and (3) ensuring the physical reliability and safety of the electrical system, including service quality, vegetation management, and storm and emergency response.?EPD staff review and analyze regulatory docketsand advise theDPUCommission on technical and policy issues. Position We are excited to offer an internship position in ourElectric Power Division. This role is ideal for candidates passionate about energy policy, clean energy, and utility regulation. Whetheryou'refamiliar with the DPU or new to our work, we welcome your fresh perspectives and enthusiasm. Key Responsibilities Assistwithreviewing and summarizinginformationsubmittedby electric utilities, other state agencies, and stakeholders on dockets related to electric sector modernization, electric rates, and/or energy efficiency. Contribute toresearch on electric sector modernization, electric rates, and/or energy efficiency in otherjurisdictions. Present findings in written form, as well as in EPD staff meetings. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge and Interest in energy policy, clean energy, and utility regulation. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Effective communication and teamwork abilities, including strong written communication skills. Knowledge of energy policyandquantitativeanalysis.
