Job Description
Overview
We are seeking a motivated Entry-Level Mechanical Engineer to support the design, drafting, and technical documentation of Industrial Refrigeration Systems, including Ammonia (NH₃), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), and Refrigerant Blends (HFC/HFO). The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, including thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
Industrial refrigeration is a fast-changing industry with unlimited opportunities for growth with a multitude of refrigeration sub-sectors. These sub-sectors include pharmaceuticals, food processing, agriculture, recreation, transportation, etc.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior engineers in the design of refrigeration systems, including:
- Compressor racks
- Evaporators, condensers, heat exchangers
- Piping networks, valves, controls, and safety systems
- Perform calculations to include line sizing, pressure drop, and heat load estimates.
- Help prepare equipment specifications, material take-offs, and bill of materials.
- Create and update 2D and 3D mechanical drawings, including:
- Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID’s)
- Refrigeration flow diagrams
- Equipment layouts and general arrangements
- Piping and support details
- Convert engineering sketches and concepts into accurate technical drawings using CAD software with AutoCAD being the primary software.
- Prepare technical documents, submittals, and as-built drawings for client and regulatory approval.
- Ensure designs follow industry codes and standards, such as:
- IIAR standards for natural refrigeration systems
- ASHRAE guidelines
- Relevant mechanical, safety, and pressure vessel codes
- Support project documentation control and revision tracking.
- Collaborate with project managers, senior engineers, vendors, and field technicians.
- Assist with shop drawings, fabrication details, and construction packages.
- Participate in project meetings.
- Visit job sites to verify routing, take measurements, and update drawings.
- Support commissioning documentation and punch-list resolution.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology
Technical Skills
- Basic proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, or similar drafting tools.
- Basic understanding of thermodynamics, refrigeration cycles, and fluid mechanics.
- Familiarity with refrigeration systems is an asset.
- Ability to interpret project drawings, schematics, and specifications.
