IT Intern: Enterprise Architecture & Solution Design

Department: Enterprise Architecture (EA) Term: Summer 2026 Location: Remote Ascension Technologies

Internship Summary

  • The Rotational Internship Program with Ascension Technologies is designed to provide an on-the-job learning opportunity to gain "real world" IT work experience in a large IT service environment, supporting IT end users who work in a healthcare setting.

  • As an Enterprise Architecture Intern , you will help build the "blueprints" for Ascension Technologies, working alongside senior architects to model our current technology landscape or design solutions for large-scale, complex programs.

  • This role is perfect for a student who loves "big picture" thinking, systems design, and logical mapping, providing a working and learning environment where interns can develop technical skills through meaningful assignments.

What You Will Do

  • As an Ascension Technologies Intern, you will be able to work on real-life and meaningful projects, develop your technical skills, collaborate, and network with various teams across the IT Infrastructure and Security continuum.

  • You will focus on one of two tracks: Enterprise Modeling & Communication , where you build out architecture components and tell richer stories about our technology, or Solution Architecture Delivery , where you design architectures for major programs to help teams estimate costs and requirements.

  • By the end of the summer, you will have left a permanent mark on Ascension's "Master Map," helping the organization avoid technical debt and more accurately estimate the work required for massive, complex healthcare initiatives. Your experience will culminate in a presentation to our architecture community and senior leadership, where you will showcase your contributions to Ascension's digital transformation.

Essential Functions

  • Enterprise Modeling: Takes a specific component of our architecture and builds it out in our enterprise tool (Abacus), adding data points and "connections".

  • Solution Design: Works directly with an Enterprise Solution Architect to "carve out" and design the architecture for a major program, mapping out how new software will integrate with existing systems.

  • Communication: Assists in developing website communications to share architecture standards across the company.

  • Project Participation: Participates in technology-related projects involving systems design and logical mapping.

  • Research: Research and data gathering for key initiatives to help architects tell richer stories about our technology.

  • Shadowing: Shadows employees to understand different roles in the organization.

  • Collaboration: Collaborates on driving improvement activities to achieve department and organizational goals.

  • Requirements Translation: Translates functional requirements to technical specifications.

What You Will Need

Education:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Communications, Organizational Development, or Project Management.

Preferred Competencies:

  • Visualization Tools: Familiarity with LucidChart or similar diagramming tools to explain complex "maps" to different stakeholders.

  • The Blueprint Mindset: An interest in learning Abacus (our Enterprise Architecture tool) and understanding how complex systems connect.

  • Communication: Strong ability to explain complex diagrams and assist in developing website communications.

  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency with Google Office tools, including meetings, slides, and spreadsheets for data organization.

  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical skills with working knowledge of data flow diagrams and data specifications.
