Centralina Regional Council seeks an energetic, self-directed individual for the position of ASSISTANT REGIONAL PLANNING DIRECTOR.

The Assistant Regional Planning Director will be responsible for supporting the Regional Planning Director in the supervision of staff members in the department, providing technical services to member governments, advising the Regional Planning Director on ways and means of planning and implementing an overall regional planning and development strategy for topics including mobility and growth; implementing planning policy needed to solve regional planning issues; helping to build collaborative partnerships across the region; and assisting in the administration of various planning activities to include: local planning initiatives, land use, transportation, energy and environment and engagement activities.

Description of the Work:
Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the Planning Director with annual program planning, scope and budget preparation, development of the annual planning retreat, annual training calendar, and semi-monthly staff meetings.
  • Assisting in providing internal training and team building activities to enhance department leadership.
  • Managing a variety of planning initiatives, serving as a point person and information provider to local governments and various agencies on planning and land use/development issues.
    • Preparing and delivering related presentations; planning and coordinating meetings, workshops, and other events.
  • Demonstrating leadership within the department, the organization, and the region.
    • Attending both internal and external meetings to represent the department as needed.
    • Serving as staff to ad hoc committees or boards/commissions and preparing related materials.
  • Coordinating grants and contracts for execution and implementation.
  • Performing grant research, writing and managing related projects; researching trends and emerging issues on program activities.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities include but are not limited to:
Successful candidate must also have knowledge of local government systems and processes, NC land use statutes, general planning principles and project management.  The successful candidate is expected to understand how the department’s program activities interrelate and complement one another, how our programs relate to other Centralina Departments, and how programs meet overall Centralina goals and member needs. Successful candidate will have professional soft-skills needed to manage both people and projects and solve problems in a professional manner.

Minimum Experience at a Glance:
Bachelor’s Degree in public administration, public policy, political science, business, urban and regional planning, or related field (Master’s Degree preferred); 7 to 9 years’ experience in land use or transportation planning, project/program development and fiscal management or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. AICP Certification required. Hiring salary: $84,500 to $107,200 dependent on qualifications.

Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license and have the ability to physically perform the basic life operation functions of standing, walking, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions, the ability to lift 20 pounds of force occasionally and possess the visual acuity to prepare data and proof work.
