Located two miles north of Uptown Charlotte, the Center of Hope sleeps an average of 275 women and children every night and offers them the stability they need as they get back on their feet. An active member of the Homeless Services Network, The Salvation Army is a leader in helping families transition into permanent, affordable housing.
The Salvation Army’s high-quality after-school programs, at our Red Shield Youth Centers, serve children and youth of all ages. Our staff and volunteers provide one-on-one assistance with homework and school assignments, as well as the teaching and advancement of literacy and study skills. Our no-fee or low-cost after-school programs offer children a chance to play sports, learn athletic skills, and cultivate healthy, safe relationships with friends through better social skills.

About The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army is dedicated to serving those in need within our community. Our Red Kettle Campaign is one of our most significant fundraising initiatives, providing essential support for our programs. We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive intern to assist with recruiting volunteer groups to ring the bell at our Red Kettle locations and to support the launch of our young professionals' volunteer group, Echelon.
Internship Overview
The Volunteer Recruitment & Outreach Intern will assist in researching and reaching out to companies, civic organizations, schools, and churches across Charlotte to encourage them to adopt days to ring the bell at the Red Kettle. Additionally, this intern will play a role in helping to establish and promote Echelon, a young professionals' volunteer network, by marketing and recruiting volunteers. The intern will also assist the HR department with administrative responsibilities and support the onboarding of summer new hires.
Key Responsibilities
- Research and identify potential volunteer groups, including businesses, schools, civic groups, and churches.
- Conduct outreach efforts, including phone calls, emails, and presentations, to recruit groups to participate in the Red Kettle Campaign.
- Develop promotional materials and messaging to engage volunteer prospects.
- Assist in coordinating volunteer schedules and maintaining communication with group leaders.
- Support the launch of Echelon by assisting in marketing, event planning, and volunteer recruitment.
- Maintain accurate records of outreach efforts and volunteer commitments.
- Assist with social media and digital marketing efforts to promote volunteer opportunities.
- Attend and represent The Salvation Army at community and networking events as needed.
- Provide administrative support to the HR department, including organizing documents, scheduling, and other clerical tasks.
- Assist in onboarding summer new hires by preparing materials and coordinating orientations.
Qualifications & Skills
- Currently pursuing a degree in Communications, Nonprofit Management, Marketing, Public Relations, Human Resources, or a related field.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comfortable making outreach calls and presenting to potential volunteer groups.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks.
- Passion for community service and volunteerism.
- Experience with social media and digital marketing is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
