Title: Communications Intern

Department: Communications

Status: Non-exempt

Reports to: National Press Secretary

Location: Washington, DC, preferred, but other locations considered (the intern may decide whether to work remotely and/or from an LCV office)

Duration: 12 Weeks – Expected January 27 – April 18, 2025 (start and end dates flexible)

Schedule and Compensation: 40 hours per week; $17.50 per hour

For more than 50 years, LCV has grown into a potent political force to strengthen our democracy, and protect our planet and everyone who inhabits it. We have built a powerful national movement with 30+ state affiliates, and grassroots and community organizing programs across the country.

LCV is seeking a Communications Intern who will support the Communications Department with its external communications on owned, earned and social media. The Communications Intern will support and learn from the entire communications team, and will assist in drafting and distributing content across all of the communications team’s platforms and audiences, which may include drafting blog posts, press statements and releases, social media copy and the weekly tipsheet. The Communications Intern will also play a key role supporting the earned media team by distributing LCV’s daily news clips to LCV staff across the country, maintaining press lists, gathering content at press events, and pitching press as needed.

The Communications Intern will actively participate in centering racial justice and equity in communications, ensuring cultural competence in all materials that also reflect the environmental justice priorities of our programs. The Communications Intern will join a Spring 2025 internship cohort that will have access to development opportunities including a Capstone project, informational interviews with staff, and organization-wide training and discussions.

Intern Will Gain Experience in:

  • Tracking and distributing daily news articles that mention LCV and our state affiliates to LCV staff across the country.
  • Assisting with writing and distributing for LCV’s weekly tip sheet for press.
  • Drafting press releases, statements, blog posts, social media copy, and other materials that are culturally competent and reflect environmental justice priorities, incorporating storytelling where appropriate.
  • Maintaining press lists.
  • Assisting with the coordination and content collection at events.
  • Assisting with uploading content, like blogs and press statements, to LCV’s website.
  • Helping maintain LCV’s photo and video libraries.
  • Actively participating in centering racial justice and equity in communications, ensuring all materials also reflect the racial justice and equity goals of the Communications team as well as the environmental justice priorities of our programs.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Communications coursework, work experience, extracurriculars, or experience with social media preferred.
  • Skills: Highly organized; strong attention to detail; excellent written and oral communications skills; strong research skills; exhibits solid judgment; critical thinking skills; able to work independently and as a team; able to handle multiple tasks; self-starter; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite; experience with press, graphic design, or social media preferred.
  • Racial Justice and Equity Competencies: Demonstrated awareness of how one’s life experiences influence one’s personal attitudes, biases, and assumptions. Demonstrated commitment to continual learning and ability to successfully deliver culturally responsive services. Commitment to equity and inclusion as organizational practice and culture. Understands how environmental issues intersect with racism, economic and social inequality in the U.S. and has a passion for working to dismantle these systems. Commitment to environmental protection and mission of LCV.
  • Working Conditions: Applicants must be located in and legally authorized to work in the United States.
