Schedule & Location

This internship is anticipated to run for approximately three months, from June through August. While the internship does not guarantee future employment, candidates who have completed an undergraduate degree may be considered for full-time employment based on business needs, performance, and mutual interest.

This position is part-time (approximately 20-25 hours per week), with schedules determined collaboratively between Rincon and the selected candidate. Hours may vary based on project needs and intern availability.

This position will be based out of Rincon's Los Angeles, with a flexible work arrangement that may include a mix of in-office and remote work depending on business needs.

About the Role

As an Urban Planning and Design Intern, you will support a variety of environmental and community planning projects across California. You will gain hands-on experience contributing to land use planning, urban design, and mobility planning efforts while working alongside Rincon's Community Planning team.

This role will involve supporting projects for a diverse range of clients, including cities, counties, transportation agencies, and private developers. It is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in applying urban planning and design principles in a consulting environment and gaining exposure to real-world projects.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing planning documents such as land use plans, specific plans, community plans, and vision plans through research, analysis, and writing

  • Support urban design and master planning efforts for transit-oriented development, campuses, and infill projects

  • Contribute to zoning codes, development standards, and design guidelines

  • Support complete streets and active transportation planning initiatives

  • Create urban design templates and collateral for maps, renderings, and other urban design exhibits. Prepare maps, exhibits, and graphics using GIS and design software

  • Assist with conceptual site plans, cross sections, and visualizations

  • Conduct research and help prepare technical memoranda, reports, and presentations

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and contribute to a positive, team-oriented work environment

What You'll Bring

  • Current status as an incoming senior, graduate student, or recent graduate (within the past two years) in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field

  • Interest in land use planning, urban design, and community development, with a desire to apply academic knowledge to real-world consulting projects

  • Working knowledge of graphic and design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), and SketchUp

  • Familiarity with GIS tools (ArcGIS Pro) and preparation of map-based exhibits

  • Exposure to AutoCAD and conceptual or schematic design work is a plus

  • Experience preparing visual materials such as plans, renderings, or perspectives (hand-rendered or digital)

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage time effectively across multiple tasks

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment

  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and eagerness to learn in a consulting setting

Desired (but not required)

  • Experience with 3D modeling or rendering tools such as Enscape, Lumion, Rhino, or similar
