Job Title: Data Analyst Intern (6-Week Project)

Position Overview
We are seeking a Data Analyst Intern to complete a focused 6-week project analyzing and modernizing our internal data environment. Our firm currently manages key operational data primarily through Excel-based databases covering invoicing, revenue, payroll, payroll costs, gross margin, and commissions across both direct hire and contract staffing business lines.
This internship will provide hands-on experience analyzing real business data and designing a roadmap for improving data collection, reporting, and analytics. The intern will work closely with leadership to evaluate current workflows and recommend more scalable approaches using modern data tools and processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and analyze the firm’s current Excel-based data structure and reporting workflows.
- Assess how operational data is currently collected, stored, and reported across:
- Invoicing
- Revenue
- Payroll and payroll costs
- Gross margin
- Recruiter and sales commissions
- Identify inefficiencies, duplication, and data integrity risks within existing spreadsheets and processes.
- Use SQL and Alteryx to explore opportunities for improved data preparation, automation, and reporting.
- Create a data architecture roadmap recommending improvements to data storage, integration, and reporting processes.
- Design prototype dashboards or reporting workflows where appropriate.
- Document recommended best practices for data governance and reporting consistency.
- Present final findings and recommendations to company leadership.
Project Deliverables
By the end of the internship, the intern will deliver:
- A current-state assessment of the company’s Excel data environment.
- A data modernization roadmap outlining recommended tools, processes, and architecture improvements.
- Suggested reporting frameworks for tracking key staffing industry metrics such as:
- Revenue
- Gross margin
- Payroll costs
- Sales and recruiting productivity
- Commission calculations
- Documentation outlining opportunities for automation, integration, and scalable reporting.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Data Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Statistics, Business Analytics, or a related field.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, formulas, and data organization.
- Working knowledge of SQL for querying and analyzing datasets.
- Experience with Alteryx or similar data preparation/ETL tools preferred.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to clearly document processes and communicate technical findings to non-technical stakeholders.
- Interest in business operations, analytics, and data-driven decision making.
